Bio/Research

Prior to joining the academic community at Laurier, I was a secondary school science and mathematics teacher in Nunavut and later in international schools in Bahrain, Malaysia, Japan, and the Czech Republic. I have worked with NGOs serving pre-service teachers in Malawi and non-formal education programming for refugee children in Greece.

I received a BSc in biology from McGill University, a BEd in intermediate education from the University of British Columbia, and an MEd in Science Education from the University of Southern Queensland, Australia. I completed my EdD in educational research in curriculum and learning at the University of Calgary in 2016. My dissertation focused on international mindedness in International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma students.

My program of research explores diversity and inclusion in domestic and international educational contexts.

As the Principal Investigator of the NSERC-funded STEMovation project, I study family-inclusive, in-community STEM outreach programming and the ways Teacher Candidates can support STEM learning for children from groups underrepresented in STEM.

Through our BA in International Education Studies, I am engaged in a multi-year study that examines the role of experiential learning, perspective-taking, and intercultural understanding in pre-service international teachers.

I work with BEd students in the evaluation and curation of high-quality teaching resources that support EDI and Decolonization in K-12 classrooms.
