Bio/Research

As a practitioner-scholar, I bring both academic and field experience into the classroom. I received a Master of Arts-Integrated Studies, in Cultural Studies, from Athabasca University, and a Bachelor of Applied Arts, in Journalism, from Ryerson University. Before starting to teach full-time, I worked as an editor and writer, in both staff and freelance capacities, for a range of Canadian media, including Bankrate Canada, Canadian Geographic, MoneySense, the National Post, Quill & Quire, Saturday Night and This Magazine.

I recently finished writing an introductory-level textbook for Oxford University Press about news writing and reporting, which was published in early 2018. As part of my Wilfrid Laurier University Teaching Fellowship, I am exploring how the use of storytelling and elements of game design can increase engagement and help students better understand the connections between theory and practice. My other research interests include literary journalism and creative nonfiction.
