Bio/Research
I’m a music educator and community musician based in Guelph, Ontario, and part-time faculty and doctoral student at Wilfrid Laurier University (Community Music PhD concentration). Following Grade Ten Conservatory certification (piano) I completed my undergraduate degree in music (piano) and a concurrent diploma in arts/non-profit management, and more recently received a Master in Community Music at Wilfrid Laurier University. Instrumental studies over the years have included piano, flute, bassoon, oboe, voice, and 'ukulele.
I provide music instruction in ‘ukulele and piano, am Director of the Royal City Ukulele Ensemble adult learning program (now in its 10th year), and run community ‘ukulele events in the region, including as Founder and Director of the Royal City Uke Fest in Guelph, Ontario. I’ve had the pleasure of travelling to ‘ukulele festivals around the world to teach and perform, including events in Finland, Scotland, and throughout the US and Canada. I taught a unique First Year Seminar course at the University of Guelph entitled The Mighty ‘Ukulele: finding its place in education, medicine, culture and community for four years, and have been teaching the Elementary Techniques ‘Ukulele course at Laurier for several years. A Level 3 James Hill Ukulele Initiative teacher (the highest level of this teacher training program), and as a former clinician for James Hill and Director of Engagement for his Uketropolis.com learning community, I take particular interest in pedagogy, process, and facilitation through the lens of the ‘ukulele and how that translates throughout the lifespan.
Currently, my research interests include community ensemble learning and participation, musical journeys across the lifespan (particularly mid-life), and well-being. Passionate about the role that music can play throughout our lives, I encourage everyone to learn and make music, regardless of their age or ability. I look forward to meeting new students and exploring what we can achieve through music in our classrooms and our communities.
