Bio/Research

Duane Heide is a part-time instructor within the Faculty of Education at Laurier, teaching the Junior Mathematics course, EU419.

He has been teaching primary, junior and intermediate students for the past 22 years within the Peel District School Board and the Waterloo Region District School Board. Currently, he teaches grade eight mathematics and science at Sunnyside Public School in Kitchener.

For two years, he was the Waterloo Region District School Board Junior Mathematics Demonstration Teacher. In this professional development project junior teachers were given release time to visit his mathematics classrooms as observers. Over 250 teachers and administrators visited his grade four and grade six classrooms.

He is interested in how children can see themselves as creative mathematical learners. He enjoys supporting teachers as they implement mathematics programs grounded in teaching through and about problem-solving.

Heide is published in various mathematics journals including the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics journal, Teaching Children Mathematics. He recently edited the course text, Making Math Meaningful for Canadian Students for the upcoming fourth edition.
