Bio/Research

I received my doctorate (DPhil) in political science from the University of Augsburg, Germany, in 2008 and my diploma (master’s degree-equivalent) in political science from the University of Augsburg, Germany, in 2001.

Prior to joining Laurier, I was assistant professor at the Technische Universität Darmstadt (2010-2013) and the FernUniversität in Hagen (2008-2010) as well as research assistant and lecturer at Universität Augsburg (2003-2008).

The main focus of my research is comparative federalism and multilevel politics more generally. I explore the patterns and implications of change in federations like Canada or Germany, as well as in regionalized states like the United Kingdom or Italy. I am also interested in the role of municipalities and supra- or international organizations. My current research focuses primarily on four topics:

The patterns and implications of federal reforms
Federalization
Federalism and the politics of market building (especially through internal and external trade policy)
Theories and methods in the field of federalism and multilevel politics
