Bio/Research

I received my PhD in Canadian History at Carleton University in 2002. Prior to joining Laurier in 2005, I taught at Trent University, in Peterborough, with the Canadian Studies Program and the Department of History.

Contributing to the development of North American Studies here at Laurier, I served as program coordinator from 2009 to 2014. Currently, I am Director of the Laurier Centre for Military, Strategic and Disarmament Studies.

I teach core courses for North American Studies and upper-year courses in aspects of the history of Canadian foreign policy for the History department.

My area of expertise is the history of Canadian foreign policy, particularly Canada’s contribution to international peacekeeping and Canadian relations with Africa. Canada’s place in the world, from the 1940s to the 1960s, remains an important focus in my writing. I am currently working on projects that explore the impact of decolonization on Canadian relations with Africa during the governments of John Diefenbaker and Lester Pearson.
