Bio/Research

Nicole received her PhD in Marketing and International Business from the University of Auckland. She also holds an MSc (Technology Management) and BComm Hons (Marketing) from the University of Saskatchewan. In 2010, she received an honorary doctorate from the Turku School of Economics (Finland). Nicole was appointed the Lazaridis Chair in International Entrepreneurship & Innovation in 2020. She also holds a Visiting Research Professor appointment at LUT University, Finland.

Nicole has held academic appointments in New Zealand (University of Waikato, University of Auckland) and Canada (University of Calgary, Wilfrid Laurier University). Her various visiting appointments include positions at Hanken (Vaasa, Finland), Turku School of Economics (Finland), University of Glasgow (Scotland), University of Canterbury (NZ), and the Technical University of Munich (Germany).

Nicole studies young technology firms, focusing on topics at the intersection of marketing strategy, international business, and entrepreneurship. Her work is published in the top journals across all three of these areas, including Journal of Marketing, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of World Business, Journal of Business Venturing, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, and Academy of Management Review. She is consistently ranked in the top 1% of business and management scholars in the world according to the annual studies conducted by the research team of Ioannidis et al. from Stanford University.

Examples of notable recognition:

- In 2014, Nicole was ranked as the number two scholar worldwide for International Marketing. She was also ranked eighteenth in the world for International Business, the only female in the ‘top 20’ list for that discipline.

- In 2016, she was named Laurier's 'University Research Professor.'

- In 2018, an international study showed her to have four of the most influential publications in International Marketing- more than any other scholar in the world.

- In both 2013 and 2019, Nicole won the Gerald E Hills Award from the American Marketing Association's Entrepreneurship SIG for 'Outstanding Contributions to Entrepreneurial Marketing in the Past 10 Years'.

- In 2020, Nicole was appointed a Fellow of the Academy of International Business.

- In 2022, she received the 'Significant Contributions to Global Marketing Award' from the American Marketing Association’s Global Marketing SIG.

Nicole sits on numerous editorial boards and is currently a Consulting Editor at the International Journal of Management Reviews. From 2009-2022, she was Field Editor (Marketing, International Entrepreneurship) at the Journal of Business Venturing. She was also Consulting Editor at the Journal of International Business Studies from 2017-2022.


Nicole’s research intersects marketing strategy, international business, and entrepreneurship.

Examples of some ongoing projects include:

- How marketing, selling, and innovation capabilities and their micro-foundations influence organizational performance (SSHRC funded research)

- Drivers of scalability in young technology firms

- Understanding passion in newly formed teams

- Developing a bibliometric-based model to guide research in international digital marketing
